Hello again! You made it back to read yet another blog post about yet another book I’ve read!! Okay, okay, I know it’s a smidge late for March, but better late than never! One of these days I will be reading and posting so routinely that it will never again warrant a line about timely posts. But it works for now and it is what it is. This month I (re)read the first book by one of my faves—Mindy Kaling! The first time I read this book was the summer before my first year of college, so it had been a little while.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
The beautiful Mindy Kaling is an American actress, comedian, screenwriter, producer, director, and author! Phew! She wears many, extravagantly fabulous hats. Mindy is a brilliant comedy writer, and she even graduated from Dartmouth with a degree in playwriting. She got her start in Hollywood as a writer and actress on The Office (US Version) and I have been obsessed with her ever since! She has also created, written, and starred in The Mindy Project which I am in the process of re-watching/binging right now. She has written other books too—which I plan on reading once I finish watching The Mindy Project! (I hate spoilers, and I think there are some for seasons I haven’t seen yet.)
ABOUT THE BOOK
Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me is a memoir published in 2011. The book was on the New York Times Bestsellers list for 5 weeks!! In it, Mindy tells stories of her life from childhood all the way to the present (2011 at the time). She also uses this book as a means to point out her often relatable and always hilarious opinions on love, friendship, her body type, and the industry she works in.
This book is, obviously, full of comedy. It almost feels like a letter written by a friend or a fun conversation—the tone is very informal. You learn a lot about Mindy, from facts and stories that she tells about herself, but also from her photos, jokes, and even bits of scripts that she has written.
Mindy gives so much of herself to this book! It is heartwarming without being stuffy or overbearing and it is very real and accessible while still being charismatic and super entertaining. If you haven’t read this book or seen her shows, I definitely recommend them!
ADDITIONAL DETAILS
- Genre: Comedy, Memoir
- Mindy includes a few images from her childhood and her unfiltered camera roll
- The first work that garnered Mindy some attention in the entertainment industry was a play she co-wrote with her best friend called Matt & Ben about Matt Damon and Ben Affleck
This book is a super fun read. I found myself laughing out loud several times! Mindy Kaling’s humor is right up my alley, so for me it was very enjoyable. I especially loved the parts about her childhood that helped mold her into who she is today. I can’t wait to read her next book! I give it 5 out of 5 stars. ★★★★★
